Election Worker Roles & Duties
Clerks, judges, and poll watchers, what each role does, the training provided, and what it pays.
Election Clerks
PAY: $17/HOUR
Clerks are the backbone of election integrity and the people who most often interact with voters. They greet voters, check them in, assist when needed, and help make sure votes are cast. Clerks also assist judges with paperwork, setup and closing, and other vital tasks. Harris County provides training, and HCRP offers supplemental training so every clerk knows how their work upholds election integrity.
Election Judges
PAY: $17–$20/HOUR
Judges supervise the election in their location, train new clerks, manage issues voters encounter, and communicate with Harris County. Judges are selected by the HCRP and assigned by the Harris County Clerk’s office. Harris County requires training, HCRP offers additional training, and a Rapid Response Team assists judges on Election Days. Judges should have prior experience as clerks.
Poll Watchers
VOLUNTEER
Republican poll watchers play a critical role overseeing election activity. Appointed by a party, candidate, or ballot-measure organization, they observe election processes, ask questions as needed, and document and report suspicious activity. Texas Secretary of State training is mandatory, and appointment paperwork is required at the polls. Prior clerk experience recommended.
